Lessons from a Navy Seal

Lessons from a Navy Seal

Last night we had an ex-Navy Seal and local entrepreneur / investor over for dinner. I’ve known him for a few years now…we’ve had a few lunches to talk business…but this was a chance to get to know each others’ families. Ironically he never told me he was a Navy Seal. Serendipitously I recently found out through a web search. I was looking for ‘extreme fitness’ (a la Navy Seal training) in Austin and saw his name on a web site. I admired his humility, which...

Why Facebook will Network Business Users

Why Facebook will Network Business Users

Facebook launched its open platform in late May, preceded and followed by a lot of buzz. As a (late) early adopter, I launched a profile several weeks ago. I uploaded my contacts and found many professional friends were already on Facebook. People who joined after me did the same thing, and added me as a friend. Today I have 140 friends on Facebook, and growing. I’ve told my team to get on Facebook and introduced colleagues to Facebook. I suppose I’m an evangelist right now, encouraging people...

114 Reasons Austin is Great

114 Reasons Austin is Great

So I’m on Facebook now — which I highly recommend…but that’s a separate post — and saw a new group called "Austin, TX is the shit". I was compelled to click through. I’m already a member of the Austin, TX group so I’m not sure I’ll join this one, however, in the description for this group they host listed reasons that, in his words, Austin is the shinizzle… I liked the list and it’s a good to do list of things to go, where to eat,...

How to Buy Presents Strategically

How to Buy Presents Strategically

When you have kids and have gone through a series of Christmas seasons, you realize that sustainment of happiness from a present is usually longer in the mind than it is in reality. Sometimes, especially with toys, the euphoria ends on December 26! This season I’m taking a different approach. I’m approaching present-giving like capital investment. In business good strategy requires allocation of resources towards areas of growth. Capital is invested towards something that has long term...

Do The Bellyflop You Fear

Do The Bellyflop You Fear

Growing up my father always quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain." Perhaps this was his favorite quote because he coached executive speaking…and studies say speaking is more feared than death! Here’s a picture of my son launching into a bellyflop, who only two months ago was afraid of swimming without a vest. How he got to this level of comfort, I can’t say. It just happened day by day, risk after risk. One day he was floating,...

Birthday Party

Birthday Party

Last night my good friend and fellow Dell "intrapreneur" hosted a triple birthday party at his house for him, his buddy William Chen, and me. It was a pretty big party with Dell folks and friends of Chris and William from Harvard. It was a lot of fun, evidenced by the late hour I awoke this morning! Here’s a picture of Chris, me and William trying to blow out the trick candles:

Initial Bazaarvoice coverage

Initial Bazaarvoice coverage

The response has been great to the ‘soft’ launch of Bazaarvoice. Several blogging friends have posted topics and Q&A on their blogs, including Jennifer Rice of Brand Mantra, Steve Rubel of Micropersuasion, Phil Gerbyshak of MakeitGreat.org and (ahem) my father of Decker Communications and BertDecker.com. There’s also  coverage from Internet Retailer, DM News, Austin Business Journal, and ClickZ. I’ll keep you updated with article and blog links here. If you’re...

I’ve Joined a Word of Mouth Startup!

I’ve Joined a Word of Mouth Startup!

I started my career in startups, mostly early, Series A companies. Then I spent 7 great years at Dell (I’ve been blogging here for over 2 years). But as my friend Roy Williams says, you have to decide to pull the trigger and ride the next bullet. Bang! Effective now and announced tomorrow publicly, I am VP of Marketing and Products for Bazaarvoice, an Austin Ventures-backed startup focused on building word of mouth for online brands. We’re still in ‘stealth mode’ on our...
